Zimmer said he likes to bring in team alums to speak with players, and Page, a Minnesota Supreme Court justice, is a member of the college and pro football halls of fame.

"He talked about what it takes to win and what it takes to be a great player," Zimmer said.

Defensive end Brian Robison acknowledged the some of the players might not have known about Page, a defensive tackle who retired after the 1981 season, but the message was important.

"He told us to always strive for excellence," Robison said. "You want to be the best person you can be. ... It's good for our younger players to to get to know some of the older players."

Zimmer said that he hasn't put any number on the amount of time the starters will play in Friday's preseason game against Oakland.

"I told them to be ready to play the whole game if I feel like it," he said.

Though that's unlikely, he did say that Matt Cassell will be the starting quarterback, but rookie Teddy Bridgewater will get some time with the starters.

"I want our players to be able to play fast and not think about their assignment," Zimmer said. "We'll be very basic in everything we do. We're trying to evaluate our players on their athletic ability."

Robison said he hopes the defense can execute perfectly, or it could be a long night.

"Coach told us that we'll keep playing until he figures things are right," Robison said. "Hopefully, we'll execute right off the bat and get out of there."

Zimmer said that the team will practice in shells Wednesday afternoon, giving the players a break. He must have been happy with Tuesday's practice. He said in the last couple days, he's noticed that the defense is doing a better job with alignments and assignments.

"If they make me happy, I'll make them happy," Zimmer said.

He said that he is throwing a lot of stuff at Bridgewater to see how he reacts, trying to figure out what he does well and what needs work. Turner said that Matt Cassell and Bridgewater have each thrown about 150 passes in competitive drills, and both has thrown only three interceptions: one because of bad decision, one because of a receiver error and one because of a good play by the defense.

"I think (Bridgewater) is playing at an awfully high level," Turner said.

While not saying it, Turner made it sound as though Cassell will start Friday's preseason game against Oakland, though Bridgewater will get some time with the first team.

"Just manage the game," Turner said. "He doesn't have to be sensational, just make good decisions."

Turner wouldn't say if running back Adrian Peterson would play, only that he was "practicing at a high level." Turner said that would give him extra time to look at backups Matt Asiata and rookie Jerick McKinnon.

Asiata is more of a pounding runner, while McKinnon is more shifty, especially in the open field. "I can see us using both of those guys because they do different things."

Turner said he's eager to see who performs well in the preseason game, which he said would be played to win. He said it's like going out to the two night practices in front of a large crowd, where the intensity is always higher than a normal practice.

"In a game, the tempo goes way up," he said. "Guys have an opportunity to react to that or they struggle with it."

Defensive coordinator George Edwards said that having Chris Crocker in the mix at safety has been a nice addition. Crocker signed Monday and practiced that afternoon. Though he's been here only two days, he's worked in coach Mike Zimmer's defense for the last seven years. Edwards said he coached Crocker in Cleveland when Crocker in 2004.

"He's then ultimate pro, as far as preparation," Edwards said. "He has a long history with coach Zimmer. You know what you're going to get from him every day."

Robert Blanton was working with the No. 1 defense at that safety spot until he suffered a hamstring injury. Jamarca Sanford, Mistral Raymond, Kurt Coleman and Dante Exum have rotated in that spot since.

"That's going to play itself out during the preseason," Edwards said. "We just have to keep pressing forward."

Edwards said that Jasper Brinkley will likely start at middle linebacker, but Audie Cole has been practicing there the last couple of days and will get some time Friday.

Zimmer acknowledged that: "I want to be hard to please. I want my expectations to be higher than anyone else. If we don't do things perfectly, I won't be pleased."

However, he said he was happy with the way the team practiced Saturday night in front of about 9,000 fans at Blakeslee Stadium. Players had the day off Sunday and did classroom work Monday morning.

"It was a great crowd," Zimmer said. "The enthusiasm in the stadium was fantastic. Now it's back to work."

Safety Andrew Zenedjo was activated form the physically unable to perform list and will be eased back into practice. Zimmer said it's important for Zendejo, who has been out with a back injury, to get on the field so he can enter the competion at that position.

"I need to see him," Zimmer said.

Zendejo is expected to join individual drills this afternoon and maybe some team work, depending on how he holds up.

"When you first come back, usually the first couple days you're knocking the rust off," he said. "I'm looking forward to doing that."

As for the other injured players, Zimmer said that safety Robert Blanton will likely miss Friday's preseason opener against Oakland because of a hamstring injury. Linebacker Brandon Watts is also missing time with a hamstring injury.

Tight end A.C. Leonard remains out, suffering from headaches. Zimmer said he's been told it's not a concussion but said that Leonard is undergoing some of the concussion tests. Leonard hasn't practiced since Wednesday.

But he also said he's looking for improvement, noting his disappointment with the how the team practiced on Friday.

"I'm looking for a better performance," he said. "We have an expectation level that we need to meet."

He said he was happy with the progress of the offensive line, especially in run blocking. He said he's a little disappointed with the defense's ability to line up in the proper positions.

"I'm not happy, but satisfied," he said. "I'm never happy."

After tonight's practice, so of the focus will shift to Friday's preseason opener against Oakland at TCF Bank Stadium. Zimmer said that some of the coaches have already started looking at the Raiders, but he's been doing more work on game situations and strategy, such as replay challenges and use of timeouts.

He said he started working with general manager Rick Spielman on 15 scenarios Saturday and has four more days to work on those things.

He said that the first preseason game is more about coaching and evaluating his players and less about tricking the Raiders.

Zimmer said that safety Robert Blanton, who had been working with the No. 1 defense, will be out a while with a hamstring injury, while cornerback Josh Robinson is close to returning from a hamstring injury, though he won't participate tonight.

Tight end A.C. Leonard is still undergoing tests for a headache that has caused him to miss the last three days.

Free Press Sports Editorhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13663837682699711116noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1670449813924859935.post-28267075953257447642014-08-01T12:18:00.001-05:002014-08-01T12:18:54.014-05:00Rookie Barr making good stridesRookie linebacker Anthony Barr, the team's No. 1 draft pick, seems to be getting more opportunities with the starters at every practice, filling in at strongside with Jasper Brinkley in the middle and Chad Greenway on the outside.

Defensive coordinator George Edwards said that Barr is showing all the skills that he saw at UCLA, prompting the Vikings to use the ninth pick in the draft on him. He has shown the ability to run with the backs and rush quarterbacks off the edge.

"I'm excited where he is," Edwards said. "He's shown a lot of flashes."

Another guy who got some first-team reps Friday was cornerback Marcus Sherels. Primarily known for his punt and kick return skills, Sherels was the outside cornerback across from Xavier Rhodes, with Captain Munnerlyn in the slot.

"I'm just trying to take advantage of the opportunity," said Sherels, who is from Rochester. "I just want to show (the coaches) that I can compete and make plays."

Edwards noticed: "If you want to cut up (video) of how you want things done, he's the guy out there doing it right."

Safety Robert Blanton continues to miss time with a hamstring injury that could cost him a month of practice. Edwards said that he's hopeful that Blanton returns soon.

"You never want to see anybody get hurt," he said. "That's a tough break for Robert."

Special teams coach Mike Priefer said he's started preparing for the NFL's experiment with the longer PAT, which becomes a 33-yard kick, and he said it will affect games, though he's not sure how.

"If (the NFL) wants to do it, we have to accept it," Priefer said. "I hope it affects our opponents more."

He also said that kicker Blair Walsh and punter Jeff Locke have already spent a lot of time practicing at the University of Minnesota's TCF Bank Stadium, where the Vikings will have home games for the next two seasons, to prepare for any tricky wind patterns that might develop there.

"Our opponents will only have 30 minutes to figure it out," he said. "We'll have had months to prepare for it."

He said that illegal contact and holding in the defensive backfield will be a points of emphasis this season. He added that there will be some technique work that the defense can do to avoid penalties, and "we will play within the rules."

When asked about some under-the-radar guys who have had a good first week of training camp, Zimmer cited cornerback Jabari Price, the team's seventh-round draft choice, and receiver Rodney Smith, who was on the roster for a few games last season.

"(Price is) covering guys pretty good," Zimmer said. "He's tough. Sometimes, young guys come in a little tentative.

"The last three, four days, (Smith) has shown up a lot better. He's running better routes."

He also mentioned fullback Zach Line and tackle Antonio Richardson.

The linebackers continue to be a work in progress, though Zimmer said that veteran Chad Greenway will likely settle in at weakside, his natural position. He had been playing some in the middle as the team tries to find its best combination, and he will likely be in the middle in nickel packages.

Zimmer said that rookie Anthony Barr has looked good at outside linebacker, as well as being used at defensive end in some pass-rushing situations.

"We're just trying to get the best 11 players on the field," Zimmer said.

He added that while receiver Cordarrelle Patterson and cornerback Captain Munnerlyn are both working their way toward full participation at practice, they will continue to take things slowly
With a new head coach and new coordinators in charge, nearly every Vikings player is learning a new scheme this preseason.

Fullback Jerome Felton said Turner's
offense is complex with “a lot of motions and shifts; that's
different than in the past.” However, he said that doesn't mean his
job changes a whole lot.

“(Turner) wants to run the football.
He wants to power run the football,” Felton said after Wednesday morning's special teams walk-thru. “That's what I
do. The basics of what I don won't change.”

For Felton, the best part of camp came
on Sunday when players put the pads on for the first time.

“As a fullback, when you don't have
the pads on, you can't show what you're about. I think it's been
important the last two days to come out here in pads to show what I
can do.”

Turner said some, but not all,
positions need that look during camp.

“Tight ends, linebackers, offensive
linemen, the full backs – seeing those guys in full pads helps you
evaluate.”

The Vikings return to the practice field today (Wednesday), following their first day off from training camp. The team has changed its schedule a bit, with this morning's walk-thru being a short, special teams-only practice from 11:20 to 11:35 a.m. The post-practice autograph session is on as scheduled.

Meantime, here are links to The Free Press coverage in today's paper (no off day for us, or the AP):

* Second-year punter Jeff Locke (pictured) ended up having a good rookie season but was inconsistent early in the year. Chad Courrier writes that he is working to make sure he doesn't have another slow start.

* One of the newcomers to this year's team is corner back Captain Munnerlyn, who was a free-agent signee from Carolina. The Associated Press writes that he's expecting to be a leader with the Vikings' young secondary and not just because of his name.

* The AP reports that, off the field, the Vikings have hired a pair of lawyers to assist in the Chris Kluwe settlement talks. One had experience investigating the Miami Dolphins bullying situation last year.
The Vikings have the day off and training camp is closed today (Tuesday). On Monday night, the team held its first of three scheduled night practices. Following is The Free Press' coverage of Monday at MSU:

* Coach Mike Zimmer wants to have a more physical team than past Vikings teams, and the road to that started on Monday night, especially during goal-line situation work. That and more in our Training Camp Notebook.

* Safety Jamarca Sanford is in a battle to retain what's been his starting job, but the Vikings' new defense may be an even better fit for him.

* The Associated Press writes about tight end Kyle Rudolph, who understands that a big raise comes with big expectations.
The team returns to practice on Wednesday with a morning walk-thru and a full-pad practice in the afternoon.

"It's a dream come true," Rudolph said. "I couldn't thank everyone enough."

Rudolph is about to start his fourth season in the NFL, and his accomplishments have been modest, with 109 receptions for 1,055 yards and 15 touchdowns in three seasons as he battled some injuries.

But he's expected to play a larger role in offensive coordinator Norv Turner's offense so Rudolph could have waited and possible benefited from another productive season.

"This is the organization that took a chance on me in the draft," he said. "Giving me this extension shows the faith they have in me."

Rudolph said that he wouldn't buy a new house and he would drive the same truck, but he did promise his high-school strength coach that he would redo the weight room at his alma mater in Cincinnati.

"He's a good guy," coach Mike Zimmer said. "And I like when good guys get rewarded."

Running back Adrian Peterson was another happy player Monday. When asked about his role in Turner's offense, which looks like it will expand with more pass-catching opportunities, he said this system is more suited to the team's talent.

"I might not be Michael Irvin or Jerry Rice, but I've been playing this game since I was 7," Peterson said. "I can catch the football."

Zimmer said that receiver Cordarrelle Patterson, who has been out with an injured foot, will participate in Monday's night practice, but only in individual drills. Cornerback Captain Munnerlyn, who is on the physically unable to perform list with a hamstring injury, could return soon, perhaps Wednesday, Zimmer said.

Monday's night practice will include a live goal-line period, as well as red zone practice. Zimmer said he likes to change the schedule a little just to see if players can adjust, and he feels like the intensity increases when you have more fans at the stadium, under the lights.
Here are links to Vikings training camp stories you'll find in Monday morning's edition of The Free Press:

* While quarterback Teddy Bridgewater (pictured) is getting a lot of attention in the early going, don't forget about linebacker Anthony Barr, the Vikings' first pick in this year's draft.

* The Freep's training camp notebook kicks off with an update on wide receiver Cordarelle Patterson, who has yet to practice due to a foot injury. Coach Mike Zimmer was hopeful that Patterson could go at tonight's (Monday's) practice. (And, oh yeah, there is an Adam Thielen note in that link.)

He said he hurt his foot "over-training" a couple days before training camp, and it's getting better, allowing him to do some jogging. He had the obligatory "can't wait to get out there" comment.

"I'm getting a little better," he said. "Lot of treatment."

Coach Mike Zimmer said he hopes that Patterson get back on the practice field by Monday's night practice. The players have Tuesday off.

Zimmer said that during the off day, he will meet with coaches and try to focus in on which players need more work and which might get fewer reps.

"We'll start honing in because we have a game in 12 days," Zimmer said.

The players seemed excited about putting on the pads and having live contact at the afternoon practice. Coaches have been saying that the first couple of days of camp were nice, but more would be learned when there is live blocking and tackling.

"There's always a little more excitement for the first practice with pads," linebacker Cad Greenway said.

"This is the last day you'll feel healthy," defensive end Brian Robison said.Free Press Sports Editorhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13663837682699711116noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1670449813924859935.post-35602414124197408942014-07-26T23:00:00.000-05:002014-07-26T23:00:00.538-05:00Links from Day 2

Day 2 of Vikings Training Camp is complete, and today (Sunday), the players will get to put the pads on for the first time. It will be interesting to see how much hitting takes place during the afternoon session.
Here are links to The Free Press' coverage of Saturday at camp:

* Left tackle Matt Kalil (pictured) struggled a bit during his sophomore season. He hopes, writes Chad Courrier, that an offseason spent working out in Minnesota will return him to his rookie form.
* Minnesota State alum Adam Thielen continues to impress and is trying to do anything he can to make the roster, even returning punts. That and more in our Training Camp Notebook.

Edwards called Minnesota State the best off-site facility in the NFL, while Turner said that it's been 10 years since he's been away from the organization's main facility for training camp.

Edwards said that there has been a lot of juggling within the linebacking corps, trying to figure out who fits where. The first unit has been Chad Greenway and Audie Cole on the outside, with Jasper Brinkley in the middle. Rookie Anthony Barr has been moved around as Edwards tries to find the best place for the athletic rookie.

He also like his group of nose guards, with free-agent Linval Joseph and Sharrif Floyd, who has lost about 15 pounds from his rookie season, playing inside.

"Those guys don't get a lot of credit, but they're big inside for us," Edwards said. "It starts right there."

Turner has coached a lot of good running backs, and he's talked with running back Adrian Peterson about how to expand his game. Turner said that Peterson can be a good third-down back because he's a good receiver and pass-protector, if put in the proper position.

Turner also talked a lot about rookie Jerrick McKinnon, who was a college quarterback. And without being prompted, he threw a compliment to running back Matt Asiata, even if Turner had trouble with the pronunciation of his last name.

"Matt finsihed the season strong," Turner said. "He's in great shape. He gives us that pounder inside."

* New defensive tackle Linval Joseph (pictured), a free-agent acquisition and former New York Giant, tells Jim Rueda that likes the way he looks in purple.

* The Associated Press takes a look at the quarterback competition, a seemingly annual event in Mankato over the last decade.

While there's competition between Cassel, Christian Ponder and rookie Teddy Bridgewater, Cassel said he's only worried about his game.

"I don't look at any of that stuff," he said. "I don't really worry about the competition. I know that, look, if I go out there and I get my reps, I gotta do the best I can do with my reps and I don't worry what's going on with them or anything else.

"Obviously, I'm trying to learn an offense just like they are. Each and and every day my focus is on that rather than, 'Oh, I have to compete ...' 'If I mess up ..." you can't be afraid to make mistakes because we're all going to do it, especially this time of year, and you gotta make those corrections."

Ponder was the starter the beginning of the year last year and eventually gave way to Cassel.

"It's different this year," Ponder said. "Last year I came in as the starter and now it looks like the position is wide open. It should be fun. We all know what Matt can do, and Bridgewater is picking things up very quickly."

Cassel and Ponder both said the have a good relationship with the others.

"The big thing is we all get along with each other. We all try to help each other," Ponder said.

Said Cassel: "Teddy got me a Gatorade today, which I was very thankful for."
The Vikings arrived on Thursday and will hit the practice field for the first time on Friday morning. Here are links to The Free Press coverage of reporting day:

This is the first training camp for coach Mike Zimmer as head coach, but he has plenty of experience to draw from when he put together his practice plans.

Matt Cassel is the No. 1 quarterback going into camp, but he's not necessarily the Week 1 starter. That and more in a reporting day notebook.

The Associated Press tackles the Mike Priefer situation after the Vikings brought out all of the key players (minus Chris Kluwe, of course) to talk about the special teams coach's suspension.

Chad Courrier doesn't believe in distractions and opines that NFL teams (and others in the media) shouldn't either.

Fans showed up early in hopes of being the first to get autographs.
The Vikings reported to Minnesota State University on Thursday, checking into the Sears Residence Hall by 2 p.m. and preparing for a 3 p.m. conditioning test.

Adrian Peterson, one of the last players to arrive, wasn't too worried about the test, presumably a series of runs and sprints:

"Conditioning test?" the recently married running back said. "I should be able to make that if I take two months off."

Zimmer takes over
This will be the first camp for coach Mike Zimmer, who talked about getting texts from his old mentor, Bill Parcells, as well as advice he's received from Bengals coach Marvin Lewis (Zimmer was with the Bengals last year and worked for Parcells with the Cowboys) as he tried to shape his first training camp.

"A little bit of all of it," he said. " I went back and took a lot of the things we did in Dallas with Parcells and went back and looked at a lot of things we were doing with Marvin Lewis. Talked to (offensive coordinator and former Chargers and Redskins head coach) Norv Turner about it a lot. But I guess when you're an old coach you get more experience that way. It's a combination of a lot of things, I think."

Many players used the word "accountability" when talking about what they expect out of Zimmer's version of training camp.

"I think he's exactly what we all needed," left tackle Matt Kalil said.

The Priefer-Kluwe situation
Much of the focus on Thursday was the Mike Priefer situation. The special teams coach will be suspended for three games when the regular season starts due to comments he made about homosexuals in a team meeting. The situation and ensuing investigation was sparked by comments made former Vikings punter Chris Kluwe.

The Vikings were wise to address the issue right away, having Zimmer, Priefer, GM Rick Spielman and long snapper Cullen Loeffler all face the media.

Priefer apologized again (as he did in a statement released last Friday) for his comments and said he's "learned a hard lesson."

There will be more on the Priefer situation in The Free Press, but a couple of interesting comments:

Loeffler not only said he laughed at Priefer's comments ("We should round up all the gays, send them to an island and then nuke it."), thinking it was a joke, but added that Kluwe laughed at it, too.

Earlier, kicker Blair Walsh might have made a veiled rip on Kluwe while praising current punter Jeff Locke: "He's a great guy, a great punter, who takes it seriously, which is nice."

Who's the QB?
Zimmer said that Matt Cassel comes into camp as the No. 1 quarterback, not necessarily as the "starter" for Week 1. There will be competition for that position and most others.

Rookie Teddy Bridgewater and fourth-year former stater Christian Ponder are the others.

Said Bridgewater: "I have to compete with myself first. That will make me a better player. Then I'll compete with the other guys, and that will make our team a better team."

More to come
In Wednesday's Free Press, we take a look at the field preparation for Vikings training camp. The Minnesota State grounds crew, led by Bruce Leivermann, have been putting in the work to make sure the fields are in perfect condition for the Vikings (as well as for the Mavericks, who will use them once training camp ends) and will continue to do so throughout camp.

"It's very interesting what the Vikings expect, but that's what MSU expects, too," Leivermann said. "We work hand in hand."
We're two days away from the Vikings' arrival at Minnesota State. The university isn't the only entity getting ready for training camp. The city of Mankato and its businesses are also preparing for the next three weeks. Last year, a record 69,000 fans attended training camp, according to Tim Krohn's article (link above).
In just four days (Thursday), the Minnesota Vikings will report to Mankato and Minnesota State University for Training Camp for the 49th year in a row. Practice begins Friday at Blakeslee Stadium (the full training camp schedule can be found to the right).

The Free Free press published its preview on Sunday, with stories on a couple of the team's budding stars and another player with local ties hoping to make the team. There's also an overview of some of the many new faces we'll see this year.

Here are some links:

• Some intriguing new faces this year, starting with coach Mike Zimmer (pictured above) and his staff.

• Defensive end Brian Robison is the man on the D-line now with Jared Allen and Kevin Williams gone.

• Tight end Kyle Rudolph emerged last season but could be in line to really break out in Norv Turner's offense.

• Former Minnesota State wide receiver Adam Thielen made the practice squad as an undrafted free agent last year. Now he's looking to make the main roster.

During his morning press conference he thanked the fans for their support over the last two-plus weeks, saying they created a great environment for the players at training camp. He also thanked the Mankato community for their hospitality as well as Minnesota State University.

"This is our 48th year here and for a lot of that time we stayed in Gage Towers," Frazier said. "This year we moved to a different dorm and things couldn't have gone better. MSU went the extra mile to make us feel welcome."

Another person Frazier thanked, albeit indirectly, was the meteorologist. He said the weather was ideal for the players and he knows they appreciated it.

Frazier himself would have preferred it to be a little more hot because he'd like the linemen to sweat a little bit more, but overall he thought the conditions were nice. He labeled the 2013 camp a success in terms of accomplishing what the team wanted to get done.

The team had a movie night earlier in the week when they all got together to go see the film Reds II, but he said there no plans to do something similar on the final night in Mankato.

"I hope nobody on the team has anything big planned," he said with a chuckle. "I hope it's low key and everybody just gets ready to fly out to Buffalo (on Thursday)."

There was popcorn and soda for the players, and coach Leslie Frazier said the movie held the attention of the group. However, he put himself in charge of choosing the movie.

"I've had other guys pick it before," Frazier said with a smile. "This time, I got involved."

Frazier said he's looking for the offense to get some first downs and the defense make some stops in Friday's preseason game at Buffalo, where both starting units will likely play into the second quarter, depending on the number of snaps.

Frazier said that cornerbacks Josh Robinson and Xavier Rhodes will get a lot of work in the next two preseason games as the Vikings try to determine their roles. Frazier said the secondary, which lacks a proven veteran, will be a key area to keep an eye on.

Frazier also talked about rookie punter Jeff Locke, who downed two punts at the 10 or better and had another 48-yarder in the preseason game. Locke also had two punts that weren't very good. Frazier said he's confident in Locke, but he needs to understand the magnitude of each kick, given that the Vikings are built to win with field position and turnovers.

Frazier said that rookie linebacker Michael Mauti will sit out the afternoon practice because of a sore knee. Defensive tackle Christian Ballard, who has missed a couple days with a sore groin, may return today.
Not injuries to any specific players but how the organization and players should deal with them.

Coaching staffs tend to be fairly closed-mouth when it comes to injured players. Part of that is because they want to respect the player's privacy and another part is because they don't want to tip off the opposition about who may or may not play in the upcoming game.

Williams says young players coming into the league need to do two things. The first is to become more familiar with how their own bodies react to an injury.

"They need to get to know their bodies better," he said. "And once they do that they need to be able to communicate that to the coaches and trainers."

Williams says it's important piece of information for both the coaches and players to have -- not just in practice but particularly in games. If a player tells a coach during a game that he's ready to go in and do the job, and then he aggravates an injury he has and is unable to continue, that can jeopardize the team's chances of winning.

The second thing Williams talked about was young players learning how to practice when they're not 100 percent. If they're not feeling right or have tightness somewhere they need to adjust how they're going to practice accordingly.

There's a fine line between just sucking it up, going out to the practice field and playing with pain and going out when your hurt and making an injury worse. The quicker the players learn the difference, the better they'll be able to contribute.Free Press Sports Editorhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13663837682699711116noreply@blogger.com0
