The Minnesota Vikings held their scheduled morning practice on Monday with three players absent. Adrian Peterson was gone due to a court date in Houston, Texas regarding his alleged night club altercation this spring.
Receiver Greg Childs, who ruptured the patella tendon in both knees during Saturday's night scrimmage at Blakeslee Stadium, is scheduled to undergo surgery today. The team re-signed A.J. Love to take his roster spot.
Offensive lineman Geoff Schwartz is scheduled to have surgery on his sports hernia Tuesday. Head coach Leslie Frazier said could be out anywhere from 4-12 weeks and might be a candidate for the PUP (Physically Unable to Perform) list.
The coaching staff seems to be placing a lot of emphasis on Friday's game for evaluation purposes. The belief is a lot of players will get a chance to separate themselves (positively or negatively) during that preseason matchup.
During Monday's media address, Frazier also expressed condolences to Andy Reid's family in the wake of the loss of his son. The Philadelphia coach's son died unexpectedly over the weekend at Eagles' training camp. General Manager Rick Spielman will attend the funeral and Frazier said he will try to, as well, if the schedule of services works out.
Running back Toby Gerhart, who is the team's No. 1 back until Adrian Peterson gets healthy, will see limited carries against San Francisco Friday. Frazier hinted that could be the norm throughout the preseason. He expects Lex Hilliard and Derrick Coleman to get a lot of work this weekend. Fullback Matt Asiata may also get some carries.
The starting fullback spot appears to be a four-way battle right now featuring free-agent signee Jerome Felton, second-year player Ryan D'Imperio, Asiata and tight end Rhett Ellison.
