Vikings running back Adrian Peterson was scheduled to do a morning press conference Tuesday, but it got pushed back to after the second practice, much to chagrin of the media throng assembled.
The Vikings went through the usual morning walk-through, but the afternoon practice (2:30-4:45 p.m.) should be more interesting as the team does some goal-line and short-yardage work.
Defensive coordinator Alan Williams did his first press conference Tuesday, opening with some nice words for Minnesota State. "The fields have been excellent, the dorms have been outstanding so we're sleeping well, and the food is good."
He was asked about several topics, including the discussion on limiting defensive tackle Kevin Williams' reps this season. On Monday, head coach Leslie Frazier said that ideally, Williams would take 30-40 snaps per game, about two-thirds, with rookie Sharrif Floyd getting the others. Later, Kevin Williams said that number was a little low, and he planned to discuss that with Frazier.
It's the same conversation that took place last season between Frazier and Jared Allen.
"They may tell you they want to play every snap," Alan Williams said. "But they knw what's best."
Williams said that Frazier gave him a stat Monday night that when a defense makes a turnover and scores, the team has a 75 percent chance of winning the game. Williams said that's why you see his players trying to force turnovers and take off running the other way during practice.
"We strive for that," he said. "It's a priority in our camp."
