With one practice to go before traveling to San Francisco for the first preseason game of the year — "scrimmage game," as coach Leslie Frazier keeps calling it, probably to the chagrin of the NFL —much of the talk Wednesday morning was about one of the players who won't be playing in the game or on the trip.
Adrian Peterson will stay back in Minnesota and continue to work out the surgically repaired knee that has kept him on the physically unable to perform list since training camp began on July 27.
Frazier still does not have a timetable for Peterson's full return but said the running back has been "relentless" in his desire to get back out there.
Said Peterson: "I'm looking forward to being out here pretty soon. I've been off about two weeks, so it's time to get going. I know that they understand that. They been watching; they've been getting good feedback. I'm sure they're probably as excited as I am."
Frazier said he'd love Peterson to get some game action in during the preseason, especially if it's projected that he'll be in the lineup during the regular-season opener on Sept. 9.
"There's no indication that he wouldn't be (ready)," Frazier said. "Everything he's done, he's right on point."
Peterson agreed, saying he needs to get some contact on the knee "to see how it feels." "I've thought about (getting hit), and I'm ready," he said.
"Anytime that you're out there and going full speed and competing you have a chance to get better," he added. "You know, geting those snaps in. It's a game, guys are bringing you down, tackling you to the ground. It will help."
Meanwhile, Peterson, who was in Houston on Monday for a court hearing regarding last month's resisting arrest charges, said he will not have to return to Texas for the next scheduled hearings.
"I feel we're really in a good position right now," he said. "The most important thing is no more interruptions. It won't interfere with what's going on with the Minnesota Vikings."
